Rakugo is a Japanese traditional performing art started in Edo period. Performers wearing kimono play several people only with gestures and changing the tone of voice on a unique square mat. Nowadays Rakugo is usually performed by professional storytellers. Themes are usually humorous incidents from daily life in the Edo period.

English Rakugo was performed for the first time by Katsura shijaku(桂枝雀). He was a carismatic Rakugo perfomer in Japan. In 1980s, he met an English teacher Masaaki Yamamoto(山本正昭), at an English school, called HOE. It was the start of an English Rakugo in Japan. Katsura shijaku started playing English Rakugo produced by Mr. Yamamoto. He performed traditional Japanese stories translated into English (White lion, Time noodle and so on) and also his original stories (Robot shizukachan and so on) at home and abroad. Even after they passed away, their spirit has been succeeded by some Rakugo performers including my teacher Sayohime. Mr. Yamamoto once said people from other countries can understand Japanese people through Rakugo, Rakugo shows people are all the same and Rakugo can contribute to bringing peace in the world by offering a laugh. ここをクリックして編集します.
